The former US vice-president Al Gore is working on a new book about the environment as a sequel to An Inconvenient Truth, his Oscar-winning film about global warming.
The Path to Survival will be published next spring to coincide with Earth Day on April 22.
According to the publisher, Rodale Books, Gore will spell out a blueprint for the changes that individuals and governments need to make to avoid catastrophic climate change.
In a statement it said the book would explain how “bold choices now to protect our environment will also create new jobs, propel sustainable economic improvements, and inspire a new generation to tackle our most challenging issues with moral leadership”.
It said the book would be, “part scientific manual, part exposé, part visionary call for a new planet-wide political movement”.
Rodale said Path to Survival would “appeal to those who were motivated by the call to action of An Inconvenient Truth and who are now ready to fight for the solutions that were considered politically impossible only a short time ago”.
As yet there are no plans to turn the book into a movie.
An Inconvenient Truth was released as a film in 2006 and won an Oscar for best documentary. Its screenings, notably in schools, have helped to reinforce the growing consensus about the dangers of climate change.
A book to accompany the film topped the New York Times bestseller list for non-fiction paperbacks.
Gore’s most recent book, The Assault On Reason, was a relentless attack on the administration of the US president, George Bush, who narrowly defeated Gore in the 2000 election.
Meanwhile, Gore has again declined to completely rule out running for president next year.
But in an interview with 02138, a magazine for Harvard graduates, he said: “It doesn’t feel right at this point.” He also said he doubted he would ever completely rule out a return to politics in the future.
In the interview he backed a proposal by the Democratic presidential hopeful Chris Dodd for a carbon tax on polluters.
“I’m convinced that we should eliminate the payroll tax and replace it dollar for dollar with a (carbon) tax,” he said.
Gore said he would probably endorse one of the Democratic party’s presidential candidates next year, but not necessarily Hillary Clinton, the wife of his former boss.
Asked if he felt an obligation to support Mrs Clinton, he said: “Uh … no. I have friendships with her and other candidates, and they’re all on equal footing at this point as far as I’m concerned.”
Having your own photo book business can be both fun and lucrative. Here are some tips to get you started,
The Basics
The first thing you will have to do to stat your very own photo book business is to do some research and acquire the appropriate software. Some of the more popular programs that you should probably give serious consideration to are: Photoshop, QwarkXPress, and InDesign. When it comes to professional-quality design, there are really no substitutes for these types of software, so be prepared to make that initial investment required to purchase them, and to spend some time learning at least a little bit about how to use them (if you haven’t already). In your design and layout programs, you should be able to create and set up some templates relatively quickly that will make your work easier as you get more and more work. Whatever you do, don’t let this step intimidate you. Yes, there may be a little bit of a learning curve at first, but if you can learn how to, say drive a car, you can learn how to use design software to some effect.
Printing and Binding
You should put some thought into whether you are going to do your own printing and binding or if you are going to outsource it. If it is the former, take a look around and start pricing binding machines. IF you intend to create hardcover books, the type of binding you will be looking at is called thermal binding. There are a few companies that manufacture thermal binding machines in a few different configurations. For the purposes of a small home business such as the one you are looking to set up, machines can be had for less than $200, or even less than $100. The process of creating hardcover books is incredibly easy and inexpensive, so having your own thermal binding machine on hand is probably the way to go.
As far as printing the pages, and customizing the covers, you have a few options there as well. If you intend to do your printing at home, you should really do your research before purchasing a printer. There are a fair number of them on the market at a variety of prices to read the reviews carefully and go from there. Another option might be to outsource the printing or now, and do the binding yourself.
Custom covers can be ordered from a few sources either on an as-needed basis, or in bulk. Make sure that the covers you order work with the binding system that you have.
Marketing Your Services
As soon as you can, put up a website, and get some business cards and perhaps a brochure. You can either create the card and brochure yourself in InDesign, or have someone with more experience do it for you. As far as creating a website, there are too many options to list here. Just make sure that the URL (web address) is easy to remember and type. Finding the right one may take some time, but it it worth it. Remember when you are doing your business planning that, thanks to the internet, you will be able to offer your services to any place you which you can mail the finished books.
Is Finishing your Book Your New Year’s Resolution?
Think of the resolution “I’m going to lose weight this year”–a statement that doesn’t show intention because it’s vague. Talk is cheap. So are you still talking about your book, yet don’t really want to finish because it’s too much work, too much money, and has too many steps? Or, you are just worried it won’t be valuable enough to sell?
For some of you the reality is you won’t finish. And the longer you “work” on your book, the more time gets between you and publishing time to make a difference in other people’s lives. For 5% of you who will do what it takes, this reminder is for you.
Don’t wait any longer to write your book. Now is the best time to get it out. When you ponder and linger, you lose interest, motivation and forward movement.. That’s why I like the idea of the “Fast-Forward Writing Technique,” that produces consistently well organized chapters that hook and motivate your reader in each paragraph.When your readers finish all of your chapters, they will recommend your book to others. But they won’t turn pages unless you make each page of your book engage them.
Remember the benefits of writing a book.
It gets your unique word out to help others to a better life. It brings solutions to your readers’ challenges. It can “brand” your business-much stronger than a business card. It makes you known as the expert in your field. If writing fiction, it entertains and educates. Finally, like me, it can make half or more of your monthly income for life.
Remember you can add marketing pizzazz to each and every chapter in its title, its introduction, its side bars and tips, and its conclusion. Apply the “Essential Nine Hot-Selling Points” before you finish and your book will sell so much better when published.
To manifest your book dream this year, make sure you make it real.
1. visualize your book finished and a great success. See the checks and credit card orders coming in each day.
2. Save money in a special bank account so you’ll have enough to get some coaching through teleseminars and writing groups.You’ll want a small amount for about 100-200 copies printed. No need to spend $1000′s on 2500 or 5000 books.
3. Know it will cost some money. If you book is so important, don’t be too frugal as to what you invest in it to get it finished.
4. Honor High Level Activities each day. Spend real writing time on your chapters, your introduction and your back cover. Aim for 1-2 hours each day or divide to suit your schedule.
5. Stop writing without feedback from peers or a qualified bookcoach. You don’t realize that even if you are a professional, you don’t know all that makes a chapter sizzle. Old writing habits such as using “is, was” or other passives mar your style, and make it long and unwieldy so your reader will yawn and turn away. You need to keep your reader engaged on each page.
6. Don’t give up. Your project may take some time. I recommend writing a short book first so you can finish fast.
7. Consider self-publishing because the traditional path takes far too long and even if you are chosen, you’ll find the time and energy you put there will not pay off nearly as much as when you learn a few promotion tips to implement yourself. The sad truth is that the publishers won’t give you much promotion.
8. Write your print and eBook at the same time. Service your online audience as well as the audience at your talks. They love and buy books. They want information on all kinds of topics. They have money to spend. Promoting to this audience is far easier, cheaper and productive than other methods.
