When calculating tax on real estate sales in Canada you must factor in depreciation, also known as Capital Cost Allowance. Depreciation represents the wear-and-tear on your property and is tax deductible.

When selling real estate in Canada, the Capital Cost Allowance that you claim in the prior taxation years must be included in your taxable income in the year of the sale. This is known as Recapture. For example, if you claimed 0,000 of Capital Cost Allowance in prior taxation years, then 0,000 of previously claimed Capital Cost Allowance will be included in your taxable income in the year of sale.

The new Credit CARD Act was originally promoted as not affecting small businesses, but this leaves out the big changes in gift card sales. Small businesses of all stripes are dependent on gift card sales as important revenue to their business. Starting August 22, 2010, all businesses must comply with the new requirements for gift card sales.

BoomTime’s guide to the Credit CARD Act for gift card sales helps small businesses navigate through these rather complex rules. Many small businesses are accustomed to selling gift cards with one year expiration dates, which is no longer allowed under the CARD Act. However, there are some important exceptions that can be invaluable to the spas, restaurants and other small businesses dependent on this form of revenue.

“We’ve have researched this new law extensively, and have created clear guidelines for small businesses that allow them to easily comply with the new law,” said Bill Bice, BoomTime’s founder and CEO. “The law is more complicated than it appears at first blush, including interaction with state law and important exemptions that can really help small businesses.”

Effective Sunday, August 22nd, the new law sets a five-year minimum term for most gift cards sold in the United States. The new law does not shorten any minimum terms required by state law. The new law only lengthens terms that were previously less than five years to the new federal minimum term. If your state had a minimum term of seven years (ie, Mass.), or does not permit any expiration date (CA, CT, FL, ME, MN, MT, NH, RI and WA), those terms still apply to gift card sales. Otherwise, the new minimum gift card term is five years from date of issue, with some important exceptions.

    ”Gift card packaging has grown rapidly as a retail product category over the past few years, and this survey shows that consumer awareness is very high – 88 percent of gift card purchasers are now aware of special packaging,” said Eric Child, Seastone President. “Retailers that do not offer gift card packaging are missing a significant revenue opportunity, since consumers are more likely to purchase a gift card if it either comes with free packaging or if packaging is available for purchase.”

The highest numbers of consumers are more likely to purchase a gift card if it comes with free packaging (84%), but many are also more likely to buy gift cards if packaging is available for purchase (55%) or if the gift card display includes multiple packaging options (62%).

The most popular format for gift card packaging is a tin box (29%), for which Seastone holds an issued patent. Tin boxes are followed by paper pouches (19%), greeting cards (15%), and stuffed animal (10%) designs. Gift card packaging is most likely to be purchased for a birthday (78%), followed by the December holidays (72%). The trend towards birthday purchases makes a strong case for year-round gift card packaging programs.

The study found that consumers expect gift card packaging to range in price from $ 1.43 for a paper carrier, $ 2.48 for a tin box, and up to $ 3.66 for a stuffed animal. However, a large majority of consumers would spend $ 5 more on a gift card if it came with free packaging. Therefore, offers such as “free packaging with any gift card purchase of $ 20 or more” are attractive for consumers.

The results of the 2008 Gift Card Packaging Study come as retailers ramp up for their 2008 year-round and holiday gift card programs. Seastone commissioned the independent survey with The Marketing Workshop to assess the current status of the gift card packaging market.
